It is particularly important to keep your house clean during these times as you are potentially risking infection by touching contaminated surfaces.

How often should you clean your house?

It varies on each household. If you have little ones, you may need to clean more often than a person living alone in a studio.

The usual cleaning methods using shop-bought disinfectants are likely to kill the virus, so you won’t need anything more specialist than your regular alcohol solutions (with at least 70% alcohol) or anti-viral household cleaning sprays.

What should I clean most often?

We would recommend focusing on the kitchen and the bathroom where you probably spend a lot of time and where cross-contamination can easily happen. Use a disinfectant to keep the toilet seat, handle and rim clean. Washing the sink regularly is also a good idea and should be done especially frequently if used by a sick person.

Other items and frequently touched surfaces you should clean regularly, include:

  • Door handles
  • Light switches
  • Appliance handles and buttons
  • Remote controls
  • Computer keyboards

Rubbish Disposal

It’s best to throw away any packaging from parcels and food and wash your hands afterwards.

Washing Clothes

Wash your clothes regularly. Use a warm water setting and dry items completely.

Cleaning the Carpet

By vacuuming several times a week, you will find it much easier to maintain clean carpets and flooring. Carpets with more people walking over them are more likely to pick up the disease. Steam cleaning is thought to kill the virus, although, while in self-isolation hoovering should suffice.
